Each year before elections on Ken-Caryl Ranch, Life at Ken-Caryl provides readers with a description of the differences between the homeowner association to which homeowners and business owners pay monthly dues (Ken-Caryl Ranch Master Association) and the metropolitan district to which homeowners and business owners pay taxes each year (Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District).

The Ken-Caryl Ranch Architectural Committee is seeking to fill a new vacancy on the committee. More details will be provided in a future issue of Life at Ken-Caryl. Architectural Comm Seeking New Member
The KCRMA Architectural Committee is seeking one new member. The Committee, created in the Master Declaration of Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions consists of five members with its primary purpose to ensure that all development is in full compliance with the Official Development Plan, applicable restrictive covenants and such rules and regulations as may be adopted from time-to-time by the Architectural Committee. They meet the second and fourth Thursday mornings of each month at 7:30 a.m. in the Ranch House. If you are interested in volunteering your services for this committee please submit a brief letter explaining your qualifications and interest in serving to Julie Kearful at Juliek@kcranch.org or Ranch House, 7676 S. Continental Divide Rd., Littleton, CO 80127.

Volunteer Diversion Officers Needed
The Jefferson and Gilpin Counties’ District Attorney’s Office is seeking volunteers to work with domestic violence offenders in their Misdemeanor Diversion Program.

Old Trailhead Kiosk Has New Look
The Manor House trailhead kiosk has been moved to a new location and has been spruced up a bit. The new location, at the intersection of Colorow and Manor House Trails, is about a half-mile west of the old location adjacent to the northwest corner of the Manor House property. New interpretive signage as well as an Open Space map highlighting the trail system has been added. The map sign can also be viewed at www.ken-carylranch.org. Look for it on the Parks and Open Space page. Six of the 24”x36” interpretive signs were made with the plan to change the panels periodically to provide Open Space users with a variety of information ranging from the geology and natural history of the Ranch to the history of human occupation in the Valley.

Home Burglaries in South Jeffco on the Rise Again
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has identified an emerging crime trend in the south part of Jefferson County involving late night/early morning home burglaries. In each case, the suspect entered the home through an open garage door. In three of the four incidents, the suspect entered the main part of the home via the garage and stole cash and valuables from inside the homes.

Rabies on the Increase
Along the Front Range
Jefferson County Public Health (JCPH) along with a coalition of human and animal health agencies are warning of an increase in rabies along the Front Range of Colorado. JCPH urges people to consider having their horses vaccinated against rabies, as well as reminds pet owners of the importance of keeping dog and cat rabies vaccinations up-to-date.

Rattlesnakes Biting People and Pets
Already this season reports have been coming in about rattlesnake bites in the area, including a seven-year-old boy that was bitten by a rattlesnake on the heel along one of the paths covered with asphalt at Chatfield Gardens, west of Chatfield Reservoir. According to Will Jones, of Denver Botanic Gardens, “This is the first time a guest has ever been bitten at Chatfield.” Reportedly, a staff member was bitten by a rattlesnake four years ago.

County to Purchase KC Ranch Property
Move for South Precinct and DMV Planned
During a meeting of the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners on June 8, 2010, the Commissioners approved Resolution CC10-229, allowing staff to move forward with the purchase of a building in the Ken-Caryl Ranch Office Park located at 11139 Bradford Road. The building would provide space for the South Precinct of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, currently located at 8101 Shaffer Parkway in the Ken-Caryl Business Center and the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) offices currently located in a retail complex at the intersection of Bowles Avenue and Kipling Parkway.

A Dog License Is a Ticket Home
Dog licensing is a requirement. It has been a way of life in the unincorporated parts of Jefferson County for several years but, in 2007, the cities of Arvada, Golden, Lakewood, Wheat Ridge and Westminster (including residents in Jefferson and Adams Counties also adopted laws to require dog owners to license their dogs.

KC Community Garden Awarded $45K Grant
Groundbreaking Slated for Spring 2011

Following two years of hard work to build support and gain approval from the Ken-Caryl Ranch Metropolitan District (KCRMD), the KC Community Garden resident initiative is a giant step closer to reality! On June 17, the Ken- Caryl Ranch Foundation (Foundation) was awarded a $45,000 Local Government Mini-Grant from Great Outdoors Colorado. This grant will propel the garden efforts forward so that construction can begin in spring 2011 — just in time for next year’s growing season!

The revision of these guidelines is intended to reduce the clutter of signage on Ken-Caryl Ranch.

Automated License Plate Readers
In April 2010, the Sheriff’s Office began deploying automatic license plate readers on three patrol vehicles in its fleet, following a three month test phase. Each plate reader is linked electronically to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation database.

Updates Available to Residents
July 4th Holiday Schedule Causes Some Confusion
This year with Independence Day falling on a Sunday, there was some confusion about the trash pickup schedule for that week. There is a way to avoid this confusion in the future.
Waste Management will add your phone number to their automated call system to alert you of any changes regarding your trash pickup if you request to be included. The Ken-Caryl Ranch Master Association does not share residents’ phone numbers, so you must either call Waste Management directly at 303-797-1600 to ask that your number be added or if you prefer, for your convenience, a request form has been included in this issue of Life at Ken-Caryl on page 3. Master Association staff will accept the forms and forward the information to Waste Management as they are collected.

Catalytic Converter Thefts
In Metro Area Prompt CIAC to Ask For Public’s Help

National Night Out is Tuesday, 8/3/10
National Night Out is a series of nationwide celebrations held on the first Tuesday in August each year. The purpose of National Night Out is to give neighbors an opportunity to get together in a setting close to home. Of the many crime prevention strategies out there, familiarity and communication among neighbors ranks among the most effective.
