Weekly Trails Report – May 24, 2020

Volunteers performed the following maintenance this past week:

  • Picked up trash along trails, in parallel with the Adopt-a-Road day.
  • Collected rocks for use in armoring a section of South Shaffer to be installed by Singletrack Trails.
  • VTCs and volunteers moved tool storage boxes with tools into position in the agreed upon locations in the backcountry.
  • Completed the build out of the new Volunteer Tool space in the Dakota Lodge barn, with a workbench, shelves, hooks, lights and secure door.
  • VTCs finished organization of the new shed after the tools were deployed to the field.

2) Trail Maintenance (Contractor):

Singletrack Trails performed maintenance of the following trails this past week:

  • High Meadow Trail, armored tread near rock outcrops
  • High Meadow Trail, repaired tread cupping at west end of trail, added drains and grade reversals in the aspens.
  • South Shaffer Trail, cleaned and/or added 8 drains, also added new armor section in drainage (using rocks volunteers collected) south of High Meadow Trail intersection.
  • South Shaffer Trail, armored two sections of trail, one north of saddle, one south of saddle, and cleaned up trail south of the saddle.
  • South Shaffer Trail, removed a large dead down tree
  • The work of South Shaffer was made more efficient by gaining access via one of our West Ranch neighbors, who allowed access across his property.
  • Singletrack Trails is now wrapped up for the season with their portion of maintenance, on budget as the VTCs gave guidance along the way to prioritize the remaining work.

3) Outlook for the week ahead:

  • VTCs will be sending instructions to the section leaders (there are 11 this year with the trail network divided into smaller chunks) so they are ready to work with their crews when vegetation maintenance season begins. Vegetation maintenance work will start soon.
