Weekly Trails Report – October 5, 2020

1.) Mastodon & Lyons Trail Reroutes:

  • Volunteers finished the connecting turn on the Hogback trail reroute and spread slash on the old alignment. Both reroutes are now 100% open.
  • A volunteer spread road base material on all entry and contact points on the bridges in East Plum / Manzantia lower trails to increase safety.
  • Minor vegetation work will occur through the fall. Some boulders will be placed on inside turns of the reroute. A switchback on North Shaffer will be reworked. That is all that remains for the 2020 maintenance season.

Weekly Trails Report – September 28, 2020

1.) Mastodon & Lyons Trail Reroutes:

  • The Lyons Trail reroute is completed and open. The old trail has been closed, the Lyons trail access gate has been locked, and temporary signs are installed. Some minor clean-up work remains for this project, including old trail rehabilitation, and a few trail adjustments.
  • Construction of the Mastodon Trail reroute is also complete.
  • Trail users are encouraged to use the new trails by crossing Ken-Caryl Ave at the traffic light.
  • Additional volunteer work sessions will be scheduled.

Additionally, Trail Improvements are coming to Williamsburg 1 Park, known as the Medema Strip. The current trail will be replaced with a new six-foot wide concrete trail. (Click to expand image) Work to upgrade this trail will begin on Oct. 19 through November, however the construction schedule will be weather dependent. Trail closures and detours will be in place during this time.

Weekly Trails Report – September 21, 2020

1) Mastodon & Lyons Trail Reroutes:

  • Construction of the Mastodon Trail reroute is complete. Trail users are encouraged to use the new Mastodon Trail by crossing Ken-Caryl Ave at the traffic light.
  • Volunteers completed approximately 90% of the Lyons Trail reroute, crossing the North Hogback trail 2-track. Soil and vegetation is stockpiled along the trail to close and revegetate old sections of the Lyons trail.
  • Additional volunteer work sessions will be scheduled.

Weekly Trails Report – September 14, 2020

1.) Mastodon & Lyons Trail Reroutes:

  • Volunteers completed construction of the Mastodon Trail. Trail users are encouraged to use the new Mastodon Trail by crossing Ken-Caryl Ave at the traffic light.
  • Volunteers completed approximately 40% of the Lyons Trail reroute
  • Additional volunteer work sessions will be scheduled for the next several weeks.

Weekly Trails Report – September 8, 2020

1) Mastodon & Lyons Trail Reroutes:

  • Volunteers progressed the construction of the Mastodon Trail. The trail is now approximately 90% complete, is connected full length, and is usable. Additional work involves fine-tuning a few sections of tread.
  • Trail users are encouraged to use the new trail by crossing Ken-Caryl Ave at the traffic light.
  • Additional volunteer work sessions will be scheduled for the next several weeks.

  • Volunteers cleared overgrown vegetation on High Meadow Trail, Docmann Trail, Cougar Trail, Bradford Trail, and Summit View Trail.
  • Volunteers removed loose rock and cleaned drainage features on High Meadow Trail and Cougar Trail

2.) Trail Reroute

  • Volunteer Trail Coordinators flagged trail reroutes for the eastern end of Mastodon Trail and the southern end of Lyons Trail for review by the Open Space Committee to improve safety of road crossing.

Weekly Trails Report – June 21, 2020

1) Trail Maintenance (Volunteers):

  • Volunteers finished the work on the Lark Bunting connector. Staff installed fencing to close off the old trail segment.
  • Volunteers worked on clearing overgrown vegetation throughout the system according to zone responsibilities and moved tarps and first aid kits to the boxes.

1) Trail Maintenance (Volunteers):

  • Volunteers worked on construction of the trail reroute from North Hogback Trail to Lark Bunting Trail. The trail reroute is 90% complete and the old trail has been closed.

Weekly Trails Report – May 24, 2020

1) Trail Maintenance (Volunteers):

Volunteers performed the following maintenance this past week:

  • Picked up trash along trails, in parallel with the Adopt-a-Road day.
  • Collected rocks for use in armoring a section of South Shaffer to be installed by Singletrack Trails.
  • VTCs and volunteers moved tool storage boxes with tools into position in the agreed upon locations in the backcountry.
  • Completed the build out of the new Volunteer Tool space in the Dakota Lodge barn, with a workbench, shelves, hooks, lights and secure door.
  • VTCs finished organization of the new shed after the tools were deployed to the field.

2) Trail Maintenance (Contractor):

Singletrack Trails performed maintenance of the following trails this past week:

  • High Meadow Trail, armored tread near rock outcrops
  • High Meadow Trail, repaired tread cupping at west end of trail, added drains and grade reversals in the aspens.
  • South Shaffer Trail, cleaned and/or added 8 drains, also added new armor section in drainage (using rocks volunteers collected) south of High Meadow Trail intersection.
  • South Shaffer Trail, armored two sections of trail, one north of saddle, one south of saddle, and cleaned up trail south of the saddle.
  • South Shaffer Trail, removed a large dead down tree
  • The work of South Shaffer was made more efficient by gaining access via one of our West Ranch neighbors, who allowed access across his property.
  • Singletrack Trails is now wrapped up for the season with their portion of maintenance, on budget as the VTCs gave guidance along the way to prioritize the remaining work.

3) Outlook for the week ahead:

  • VTCs will be sending instructions to the section leaders (there are 11 this year with the trail network divided into smaller chunks) so they are ready to work with their crews when vegetation maintenance season begins. Vegetation maintenance work will start soon.

Weekly Trails Report – May 17, 2020

1) Volunteer Trail Maintenance:
• Volunteers added rock armoring where Docmann Trail crosses the creek and added granular soil to the trail to mitigate seasonal mud.
• In prior weeks, volunteers performed initial vegetation maintenance on selected trails and removed loose rocks from trails.

2) Contractor Trail Maintenance:
• Singletrack Trails performed maintenance on the following trails this past week:
• Massey Draw Trail, at the intersection with Colorow Trail, repaired two drainage features
• Stove Prairie Trail, added a drainage feature at Ptarmigan access
• North Shaffer Trail, at Manor House intersection, corrected & redesigned drainage
• North Shaffer Trail, 250 yards below top, repaired erosion with new rock armor
• Bradford Trail, above Domino Trail, improved drainage and mitigated erosion
• Bradford Trail, just below Beacon Hill / Summit View intersection, armored perennially wet section and improved drainage feature
• Colorow Trail, near Lost Canyon Trail, provided better tread definition and placed anchor rocks
• Summit View Trail, repaired erosion, added rock armoring
• Cougar Trail, minor tread repair, 3 locations
• Golden Banner Trail, minor tread and drainage feature repair, 2 locations

3) Outlook for the week ahead:
• Singletrack Trails will continue trail maintenance, with a smaller crew. Work will include maintenance on High Meadow Trail and South Shaffer Trail. All maintenance work is intended to mitigate erosion on short sections of trail.
