Common Wildlife in Ken-Caryl

Ken-Caryl Ranch is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer and elk, which are often seen grazing in open spaces and residential areas. Coyotes, adaptable predators, play an important role in balancing the ecosystem, while black bears are drawn to food sources like garbage, bird feeders, and fruit trees—making it essential to keep attractants secured. Mountain lions are present, so it’s important to remain aware of your surroundings, especially when hiking. The area also boasts a vibrant population of raptors and birds, including hawks, owls, and a variety of songbirds, adding to the natural beauty of the community.

What to Do if You Encounter Wildlife

When encountering wildlife, always keep your distance and allow an animal an avoidance route to avoid stressing the animal or putting yourself at risk. If an animal gets too close, you may haze the animal with noise makers, clapping hands or carry a walking stick to strike the ground. Never attempt to touch or feed wild animals, as this can harm both you and the animal. If you notice injured or aggressive wildlife, promptly report it to the Ken-Caryl Ranch Park Rangers at 303-979-1876 ext. 170.

Protecting Wildlife Habitats

Living alongside wildlife comes with responsibilities to ensure peaceful coexistence. Avoid feeding wildlife, as it disrupts their natural foraging behaviors, causing disease and secure trash bins to prevent attracting animals. Be mindful of your surroundings, especially at dawn and dusk when animals are most active and always drive carefully and the speed limit to avoid wildlife collisions. Staying on designated trails, keeping dogs leashed, and following Leave No Trace principles help protect the natural habitats that support Ken-Caryl’s diverse wildlife population.
