Open Space

Ken-Caryl Ranch Open Space was set aside to protect the delicate wildflowers, breathtaking views and dramatic splendor of this historic Colorado homestead. The community has been planned and developed with a keen foresight and respect for nature so that residents can enjoy a recreational lifestyle in a naturally scenic environment. We are committed to managing Open Space resources in a manner that ensures its preservation and enjoyment.

VOLUNTEER PATROLLERS

Volunteer Patrollers serve as an extension of the Ken-Caryl Ranch Master Association’s Park Ranger Staff, helping to educate visitors on Open Space and Parks Rules, trail use guidelines, and basic first aid. They play a vital role in fostering a positive and respectful trail experience for all users while maintaining a professional presence in the community.

In addition to patrolling, volunteers assist KCRMA Rangers at educational events and participate in special patrols. Patrollers are expected to log their hours and submit patrol reports in a timely manner through the Ken-Caryl Trail Club.

The Volunteer Patroller program began in 2012 with just three volunteers and has since grown significantly, reaching 28 volunteers in 2021, who contributed over 600 hours on the trails. Patrollers receive training in ranger services, conflict management, emergency response, outdoor safety, and resource protection. They are equipped with an open space patrol vest, volunteer ID, first aid kit, and other necessary materials.

Currently, we are not accepting new Volunteer Patrollers. If opportunities become available in the future, we will share details on how to apply. For any questions, please contact Gary Norton at garyn@kcranch.org.

WILDLIFE OUTREACH TEAM

The Ken-Caryl Ranch Master Association Ranger Staff, in partnership with Colorado Parks and Wildlife, has launched an exciting new volunteer initiative: the Wildlife Outreach Team (WOT).

This dedicated group of trained volunteers helps educate residents about living responsibly with local wildlife—especially bears and deer—and provides support at trailheads, intersections, and special events. Their work includes:

  1. Sharing information about safe wildlife interactions
  2. Rotating and maintaining educational signage in Open Space areas
  3. Serving as approachable representatives for wildlife awareness

Volunteers wear official WOT shirts and name tags, making them easy to spot on the trails. While the team is currently limited to four trained members, residents are encouraged to say hello, ask questions, and learn more about how we can all play a part in protecting our wildlife and open spaces.

The Wildlife Outreach Team is directed by the Ken-Caryl Rangers, with supplies and training provided by Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

For more information, please contact Park Ranger, Mike Ryan.
